YORK, PENNSYLVANIA – A deer decoy sustained irreparable damage this week when it was hit by a car during an accident that resulted in the death of an elderly couple in York Pennsylvania.
The accident, which took place at the corner of East York Street and Haines Road, was visible to shoppers in the nearby Walgreens and Walmart Super Center.
Several shoppers described the horrific scene as a powerful, ground-shaking impact followed by an eruption of countless plastic deer parts blasting across the intersection.
York College of Pennsylvania Students Confess
Two students at the York College of Pennsylvania, about 3 miles from the accident location, confessed to stealing the deer decoy and placing it in the road as a practical joke. The duo also stated they regret causing such damage to the deer decoy.
The York Daily Record Newspaper said prior to the accident the deer decoy was in excellent condition.
Several emergency rescue workers dispatched to the accident became very emotional when describing the disturbing image of deer decoy pieces scattered across the intersection.

Diners from some of the most popular restaurants in York assist in cleanup
Good samaritans from several favorite nearby local restaurants, including the busy Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant (Yelp! Rating: 4.2) on East York Street and the popular Round the Clock Diner (Yelp! Rating: 4.2) on Haines Road, helped first responders gather the numerous plastic deer parts.
York officials say several parts are still missing and encourage citizens who find remaining parts to bring them to the York Police Department where each part will be cataloged with the rest of the deer decoy remains.
Deer parts collection bin available at Chick-fil-A
The nearby Chick-fil-A on East York Street announced it has placed a small collection bin at its entrance for people who wish to drop off plastic deer parts.
York TV station performs live recreation of accident
In a live accident recreation NBC affiliate, WGAL 8 reported some of the plastic deer parts may have traveled as far as the Suburban Park Apartments located about a quarter mile away on Eastern Blvd.
Repair space donated by York Peppermint Pattie factory
Temporary space for making repairs to the deer decoy has been donated by the York Peppermint Pattie Company inside the company’s nearby factory adjacent to Jack Giambalvo Hyundai dealership on Industrial Highway.
Reports indicate the owner has not yet identified or claimed the damaged decoy.
“Hopefully, as word of this tragedy reaches the public, someone will come forward to make an ID,” said York Sheriff Paul Westmoreland.
